What Can you Do About It?

Ask this question…a lot: What can you do about it?

Asking students to identify the problem is the first step.

Identifying solutions is the second, and implementing those solutions is the third.

Often it’s best to be prescriptive in identifying solutions – do this, do that. But given the chance, I think it’s worth asking students how to solve problems. First, because they can begin to articulate their own musical ideas, second because they have a unique viewpoint that should be nurtured and developed, and third because often it’s a chance to reiterate your own tried and true solutions – in someone else’s voice.

Let your students identify solutions and see what brilliant ideas they come up with. It’s slower, but it’s more valuable.
