Overclocking

There’s no way to finish Maycember without an overclocked brain.

Overclocking is the pushing of computer processors past their natural limits, allowing them to work faster than expected (at some cost of overheat or early failure).

I talked with a woman recently who had recently had a benign brain tumor removed. Pushing on her verbal centers, she had found herself unable to talk or sing. Since the surgery, all has returned to normal, but she has also found herself sleeping only three hours per night. My guess is that her brain was overclocking to counteract the tumor, and still needs to adjust post-surgery.

In the same way, all teacher and especially music educators probably enter summer with an overclocked brain. I certainly have continued waking up before 6, despite late nights with family, and the overclocking is to blame.

That’s why I’m taking a forced hard break for a few days. Turning off everything is the only way I know to do a hard reset on my brain, and get back to a normal brain speed.
