Interesting Questions

There are no bad questions, true, but there are uninteresting questions.

And the thing is, we have trained computers for decades to get good at answering uninteresting questions.

Who played the keyboard parts on “Get Back”? Google will tell you in a split second. (Billy Preston)

How are the Red Wings doing so far this season? (2-3-2…not great.)

Is Tom Lehrer still alive? (Sadly, no.)

What’s left when computers can answer all the uninteresting questions?

Well, start asking interesting questions.

How would Billy Preston play keys on my song?

What can the Red Wings do to improve their scoring?

What if I wrote an extra verse to Tom Lehrer’s “Pollution” about global climate change?

As educators, and as an education system, we need to get better at teaching our students to ask interesting questions.

Interesting questions require knowledge, insight, and perspective. And interesting questions lead our lives in interesting directions.
