Specific goals spur action.
In David Allen’s Getting Things Done, he differentiates between Projects and Next Action Items.
Projects encompass something to achieve – from beginning to end. A concert cycle, a composition, a piece you’re learning to play.
Next Action Items are far more specific, and don’t require any inputs to achieve. For a composition, next action items include: selecting instrumentation, choosing key, charting out form, creating a melodic framework, notating sketches, creating a notation file, and so many more.
When you are thinking generally, “I have to write this composition” it can be easy to stall. When you are thinking specifically, “I need to explore the melodic framework” it can become easier to sit down and do the work.
The same is true for a concert cycle, learning a piece, and basically any project you might choose.
Break your goal into the smallest pieces you can, and then begin to cross them off.
