My favorite Mel Tormé era is the ’80s. His voice was in great shape, and his musical interpretation reached ever-higher levels of sophistication. There are a number of great live albums from the ’80s and ’90s, including a fantastic album in concert with the great George Shearing.
Here’s a wonderful addition to that collection: a filmed live concert from Berlin in 1989. The musicality, the showmanship, the live interaction. This is simply a fantastic example of live jazz singing.
