Making good musical choices requires context.
Every singer in every choir is making thousands of musical choices every rehearsal or performance. Precise dynamics, articulation strength, tuning, diction, vowel shape – these are just a few of the many factors they have to make decisions about. Even when decisions have been made well in advance, each singer is still reacting and adjusting every moment.
It’s essential, then, to consider context. What is the musical context here, and how does it inform the strength of my crescendo? How does the musical context inform how this forte on page 2 relates to the forte on page 7?
If we were in the middle of a tennis match and I pulled out a scimitar and rushed the net, that would be highly inappropriate for the context of the “battle” we were engaged in. And yet, I often hear singers make those sorts of musical choices.
Make intentional choices, and let appropriate musical context guide them.
