Full Tilt Rehearsals

There’s different speeds for rehearsals.

I am usually of the mindset that my rehearsals are also lessons. I’m teaching a little technique, a little history, a little theory, a little musicianship, a little human nature. It’s all in the context of working on the music, but it’s not just the music.

Every May, I also direct a ya’ll come choir, RAMChoir, that learns four pieces in four 90-minute rehearsals. It’s fun, and it’s rewarding, and it’s not school. I might throw in some musical ideas, but it’s usually full-tilt rehearsal for an hour and half. This other speed can be thrilling for musicians accustomed to a more education-minded rehearsal. It’s thrilling for the conductor, too.

It’s worth considering what speed your rehearsals tend to go at, and change it up. Slow it down, with more intentional digressions. Speed it up and keep your singers on their toes.

This RAMChoir, I’m reminding myself to change up the pace.
