Everything We Do Has A Reason

This is a great way to feel prepared.

One of Steve Zegree’s motivating mantras was “Everything we do has a reason – if you wonder, just ask.” And he would gladly take the time to talk about the reasoning behind a decision, an expectation, a programming choice, or any other aspect of the Gold Company experience.

It can be all-too-easy to fall back on, “Because I’m the leader” as a response to these questions. And there has to be some of that. There are often many good ways to approach a problem; we’re solving it this way because I chose it.

But students don’t want to engage in blind obedience, and I don’t blame them. But to not force obedience is to have every decision be considered and chosen intentionally. Just knowing that you have taken that time is enough for your students to follow you without asking a lot of questions. They know you’ve got an answer ready if they do ask.

More than score study, more than piano practice, more than any other type of rehearsal preparation: I think that having a clear reason for the choices I’m making about the ensemble is the best way I can spend time outside rehearsal.
