You don’t have to work painstakingly on every phrase.
Pick one, and pick it apart. Explain why you’re making the choices and what it means to the piece. Really polish up those four or eight bars.
Then let the ensemble know: “let that guide your interpretation for the rest of the piece.”
Will you still have things to work on? Of course. But a well-engaged ensemble can extrapolate from detailed information and do a big percentage of the work in their brains, costing zero rehearsal time.
