Artistry takes time.
I always am amazed at this time of year at the way ensembles tackle artistry more quickly. New repertoire comes more quickly, but so does interpretive nuance and a sense of ensemble on that repertoire.
One of the things the ensemble has built in the course of a school year is the ability to communicate more efficiently, to understand how their parts fit together.
Artistry grows over time for individuals, of course – as we learn and develop, we make better art more quickly. But an ensemble grows much like an individual does. No ensemble is making its best art at the beginning of its time together.
Relish these last weeks of art-making with your ensembles. Soon you’ll begin again.
