Stilts

Gaining experience is like getting on stilts.

The terrain is the same. You have to take as many steps to get across the street.

But you can see farther because you’re higher up. You can anticipate difficult terrain, or even avoid it. Day-to-day challenges don’t overwhelm you because you’ve gained some distance from the ground. And sometimes you can even take bigger steps and get where you’re going more efficiently.

I don’t know of another way to get on the stilts than experience – the slow, repetitive work of learning the job from the inside. You can speed it up with careful attention, reflection, and mentorship, but the path is the same. Experience.
