Starting Out Bad

I had a class trying something they’d never done before.

The message I wanted them to internalize, more than any other, is “You’re going to be bad at it.”

Because that’s how we get good at new skills…by starting out bad. Starting out bad is made of two things: being bad and starting out. Too often, we let the prospect of being bad stop us from starting out.

Once they got their hands on the mixing console, they started to get a sense of what they were doing. Still not good, but they had started. Now they had a line to build from. As they continue to work on these skills, they will build on top of where they started.

You’re going to start out bad. Start anyway.
