I got the chance this week right in Grand Rapids at St. Cecilia Music Center. What I heard was a brilliant young artist, a generational voice, and a commitment to artistry and specifically jazz singing.
She began her concert with a 2-minute long a cappella prelude that was nothing short of breathtaking. From there it was 90 minutes that felt like a third of that. When she said it was her last number, I was truly surprised.
She’s going to do remarkable things in her career, and the impression from the audience was that she’s doing it the right way – with a collaborative team of musicians and exploration.
She’s touring…a lot. When she gets close, take the time to see her in person. And in the meantime, dig her records!
