Reinvention: Sufficient Time

This week we’re considering rationales and strategies for reinvention. If you’re reinventing something, be sure to have sufficient time.

I am a firm proponent of the “It takes less time than you think” mentality, but reinvention is the rare exception. Reinvention takes more time than you think.

All the little things need to be re-developed when you reinvent something. There are so many details that don’t need to be thought about in an established project that do when you reinvent it.

As an example, when I transitioned from Finale to Dorico as my notation software, I needed a few months to regain the proficiency that I had previously had. During those months, I was much slower at executing things than I had been before I began my reinvention. In the end, I was glad I did – I’m faster now than I ever was with Finale, and enjoy the process more. But the reinvention took time, and budgeting that time was essential.
