Rehearsal As Centering Tool

Anything can be meditative.

Time was, rehearsal was a frenetic, fast-paced, frantic place for me, and my mind raced to keep up with and stay ahead of my ensemble. It’s exhausting!

Today I entered my rehearsal tired and left with energy and a calmness. That combination did two things for me: first, it affirmed that the work I’m doing is the right work. That’s a great affirmation on a long week. Second, it showed me how my relationship to rehearsal has changed.

I’m still frenetic, I’m still fast-paced. I’m not frantic. It’s a moving meditation.

My ever-distracted mind deeply appreciates the moving meditation of rehearsal. It’s the best centering tool I know.
