I’ve never directed a group with just one on a part.
To start: I feel incredibly lucky that I am able to run a class with this few number of singers; I am thrilled to be able to program quartet repertoire for them. We’re exploring great vocal jazz quartets from the past, including The Hi-Lo’s, Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, etc., as well as some of my own arrangements.
I’m most interested in how my teaching will change, knowing that every single person is fully responsible for their part. As a singer myself, I have always been an ensemble singer, and find myself more successful when I’m singing with at least one other person. I extend that understanding to my students – even if you can’t sing your part alone in a solo or quartet test, you still can be successful.
Empowering these four fine singers to feel confident, supported, and successful is my mission. I’ll experiment with them and be honest that we’re all learning as we go.
I welcome any suggestions for helping a quartet succeed as a vocal jazz group!
