Fourth Most Important Thing

Singing isn’t the most important thing to happen at a choir retreat.

In fact, I called it the fourth most important thing at my recent Rockford Aces Retreat. (We’ve been holding them since at least 2012.)

What’s more important than singing at a choir retreat?

  • Team building (developing the trust and relational capacity needed to be a successful team all year).
  • Games & laughter (building one on one and group friendships that make it all worthwhile).
  • Dreaming and discussing (creating the vision and the goals that will animate us as an ensemble).

Of course, we still found time to sing and sang four pieces for their family and friends as an “informance” at the end of the weekend. But that music-making wasn’t anywhere near the most important work of the weekend.
