You can maybe see two steps ahead in life.
If you’re lucky.
More often you can only see one step ahead. But you want to see miles ahead – to know that this choice will work out, to be certain that your career path will pay off – indeed, to make the decision because you see that it will work out.
It’s not that way. It’s not that way at seventeen when you’re trying to decide what to do after high school, and it’s not that way at twenty-two when you’re trying to decide where to move and what to do with your degree.
It’s not even that way at 49, when you’ve traveled a lot of roads and might think you can see farther.
It’s not possible, so choose be okay with it. Be okay with not knowing. Trying to see farther than you can see is tiring and futile. Putting that energy into today will work better.
