Music Does It

Music is the great emotional connector.

I got to bear witness to a remarkable performance today, a good man singing to his wife on their 57th anniversary, in a crowded room of musicians. The song “The Very Thought of You” broke me wide open, weeping at the beauty of it all.

A speech rarely does that. Music does it.

Also this week, I was lifted into joy by music, made to laugh by music, connected with friends and family. Music does it all.

Soon I’ll be in the weeds, worrying about chord tuning, balance, accurate notes, diction, and the rest. But at this moment, I’m focused on what music does. It offers the most direct access I know to the entire range of human emotions, and gives us access to the emotions that we too often lock away.

Music does it.
