I dare you to take a longer break.
What was the last day you completely didn’t think about work? For me, I even worked every day I was home with COVID this winter. My last day without work thoughts was in early August, on my off-the-grid family vacation.
For better or worse, I am obsessed with the work I do. Most music educators I know are. That combination of work and calling, plus the hours it takes to do the job well, means that there are precious few days – even hours – when work isn’t on our mind.
This summer, I am daring myself to take longer breaks. To dig deep into the things I love that have nothing to do with music. To rest.
It will make my work better when I return, and it will make my break precious to have it extended.
School ends today, and I won’t write here until August. Don’t worry, I’m still writing, and I’m still publishing daily. But I’m going to take a full week here and there, days often, and put as many hours together as I can where work is not on the agenda. I dare you to do the same.
