What’s to enjoy about practice?
Not much, to be honest. Practice is best defined as intentional time spent doing things you’re not (yet) good at.
By definition, then, we’re failing, or nearly failing, whenever we practice. We can get much more enjoyment if we practice things we’re good at – but then the practice doesn’t do much good, does it?
So how do you find enough enjoyment to keep going?
Practice logs. Notice what you’re doing poorly, what improvement you made. Do it again and again, and then…after a month of practice, go back and look.
It’s too easy to forget where we were and not notice our growth; practice logs make the growth tangible and make practice a joy because we notice the difference it makes.
