Emotionally In Touch

Choir does this really well.

One of my core values is being conscious of – in touch with – emotions. Especially for men, who historically have been encouraged to bottle up their emotions. Empowering young men to access, express, and manage their emotions is part of my mission as an educator.

It’s one of the things being in a choir does best. We ask students to understand and express emotions in the context of singing, but also in the context of relating with fellow choir members. It goes double in small groups and in musicals, where emotional content is at the center of a well-conceived production.

Spend enough time expressing feelings, and you’ll eventually be able to understand and process your own just a little better.
