Do your job well enough that it’s not needed anymore.
I try to teach like I parent: with the goal of autonomous young people leaving my classroom, ready to pursue their next experiences, musical or otherwise, informed by our time together.
In both cases, you can’t possibly know while you’re doing it if you’re doing it well. Have I told them everything I should have? Have I supported them, challenged them, pushed them, comforted them?
In any case, you won’t know right away. You just have to let them head out to their next adventure, and hope that you gave them some of what they will need out there.
Living in the not-knowing is hard – but there’s no other option.
Do your best. Send them on their way. Be there for them when they need you.
