Begin Again

Every ending comes with a new beginning.

Oh, how it’s been a lovely break. family, baking, games, and deep rest. Now, the countdown is on to beginning the marathon again tomorrow. In just a few short hours, alarms will go off, lunches will get made, and we’ll start again the good and valuable work of shaping the future by making music.

This transition can be hard – I know the Sunday Scaries will be extra scary tonight for some, after a two-week weekend. I have found that acknowledging it from the beginning has made it easier to feel ready for what comes next.

That, and being excited for all the things I’ll do and create in the coming months.

With the publication of my first book, Jazz Theory For Choral Musicians, I am addressing another ending – five years of work on the book and more developing the skills and knowledge that went into it. I’m treating it the same as I do the last day before break, though. Every ending comes with a new beginning. Unlike Winter Break, I don’t quite know what the beginning will be, but I am excited to discover what it will be.

What’s your last-day-of-break tradition? How do you negotiate endings and beginnings?
