As leaders, it’s important to anticipate and facilitate our students’ emotional journey.
Big experiences come with big emotions. And while we as leaders are not separated from the emotional journey – often we’re on the same journey – we must help our students with those big emotions.
That means helping students navigate the first day emotions, the emotions of a big concert, the emotions of hellos and goodbyes and audition results.
Setting a framework and taking emotional action to support the students is just as important as the coaching, teaching, conducting, directing, that we do.
The last day of summer is a tenuous time for kids everywhere. For years, I’ve reserved my actions on this day to be available to support them. That might be extra hugs, a delicious meal or two, a walk in the sunshine, or a nostalgic movie after dinner. All in service of their ability to navigate their difficult emotions.
For those starting a new school year soon, good luck – and may your students big emotions be in loving hands!
