“Follow your heart, and you’ll never work and day in your life.”
So goes the aphorism we tell young people – heck, we tell ourselves! And it’s just not true.
Doing things well is hard, whether you love doing them or not.
That’s the truth. It’s also still a good argument for doing things you love doing.
I live for the time I spend with my ensembles – both The Rockford Aces and Shades of Blue inspire me and motivate me. Making music with them is a privilege and a joy, and I never take those opportunities for granted.
It’s also darn hard work. After a two-hour rehearsal with Shades today, my brain is spent from the work we did together. It’s spent in the best way, but it’s spent. The same will be true Thursday night after Aces.
If I believed that old saw, I might question my heart – this feels like work!
But I know the truth.
Doing things well is hard, whether you love doing them or not. You might as well work hard on something you love.
