Just try imagining social gatherings without music.
I spent a minute while chaperoning Prom tonight imagining what it would be like without music. I laughed at the way the event would fall apart without music to connect it.
But that’s true for almost every gathering I can think of. Religious gatherings, milestones like weddings or funerals, graduation, athletic gatherings, social gatherings from dinner parties to barbecues.
The type of music changes but the need for music doesn’t.
Music is the glue to our social connection. Its impact on our lives is unequaled by any other art, craft, or pastime.
You can have social gatherings without food or drink. You can have social gatherings without sports. You can have social gatherings without ceremony. But it’s almost impossible to have a meaningful gathering without music.
