Rehearsals can have wildly different intentions.
Obviously a first rehearsal is different than a dress rehearsal. A sectional is different than a rehearsal with the orchestra.
I spent the day in a rehearsal with an unusual goal. My rehearsal was a first read-through of music with the Michigan All-State Jazz Choir. Our intention was simply to know how each piece would challenge us. I didn’t teach any notes or rhythms, I gave barely any feedback on tone, feel, or style. Not the point.
We read through a piece, with a guide track. Then the ensemble spent time in sectionals, working on details with their practice tracks. Then we wrapped up with two sing-throughs of the piece before moving on.
Pencils were active, marking potential problem spots and anything else important. Now the ensemble has about seven weeks to practice, master, and memorize the pieces before they meet again. I’m confident that the structure of this rehearsal will help them make good use of the time and feel very prepared.
