Start asking yourself this question – all the time!
What would it take to change your mind about an issue?
What would it take to change my mind about who you voted for in the presidential election?
What would it take to change my mind about trans rights?
What would it take to change my mind about high school show choir?
What would it take to change my mind about what side I like with my sandwich order?
What would it take to change my mind about the dynamic shape of a certain musical phrase?
At every level, it’s worth knowing what would change your mind. Because until you think of your beliefs as mutable, they will remain fixed. If yours are fixed, you can assume that the people you love have fixed beliefs too – and if you’re like me, you probably have people in your life whose beliefs you wish weren’t fixed. (Especially about show choir!)
When you’ve gotten comfortable asking and answering this question, normalize generously asking this question of the people in your life, too.
