What Was Hard/What Is Hard

Being creative is always hard. But what makes it hard can change over time. Here are some examples from my own arranging/composing experience.

What was hard

  • Choosing a song to arrange or a text to set.
  • Having a creative idea on how to arrange it.
  • Finding a solution to a musical problem.
  • Sloooowly notating it correctly.
  • Finding a group to sing it well.

What is hard

  • Finding time to get to my studio and write.
  • Having a novel idea on how to set something.
  • Choosing the right solution from the possibilities I see.
  • Paring my writing back to its simplest and purest form.

When I find solutions to those challenges, other ones will crop up. The secret is that creativity never gets easy, it just gets familiar; and the hardness becomes a friend rather than a roadblock.
