What I teach today is different than what I taught twenty years ago.
Part of that is because I’m a different person than I was twenty years ago. Life changes us in profound ways.
Part of that is that I think I’m a better teacher – so I’m teaching different things because I see better what and how to teach.
And part of it is that I’m teaching different students than I was twenty years ago. Generational changes, while not as cut and dry as we might think from watching TikTok and Instagram short-form videos about Xers and Millennials, are real. And I think a good teacher must change how and what they teach in order to be effective in front of their current students.
I don’t look back on my early years teaching and think I was a bad teacher; just that I was a different teacher. In another twenty I’ll be a different teacher all over again.
