We rehearsed together today–I and the next generation of The Rockford Aces.
It wasn’t like any other rehearsal we’ve ever had. Between the masks, the distance, and the September wind, we could hardly hear each other. None of us had sung in a group in a solid six months.
But we rehearsed together. We learned notes, we shared laughter and introductions. We started down the road of becoming an ensemble.
In this strange moment, I worked very hard to emphasize a few ideas to carry forward.
- This will be a most unusual year. No concerts we are working towards. No in-person festivals.
- Hold plans loosely (a good 2020 motto). Don’t expect 2020 to stop giving you unexpected
- Give yourself grace. It’s been a long time since you’ve done this. You’re out of shape, and your ears and voice will need time to get back into good form.
- We are focusing on core values. Singing together. Camaraderie. Doing our best for each other and for ourselves.
I don’t know what this school year will bring, but I am excited to do it together with my outstanding students.
