Until it Disappears

When I’m working on a recording or video project, there’s often a spot with a little timing or balance issue that needs solving along the way. My favorite moment is when I take the final step and the issue completely disappears, and it’s impossible to hear there ever was an issue.

Perhaps it’s syncing up two or more audio tracks, as I often did when making virtual choir videos. As you lay in an additional video, you can get it close on sight, but then need to line up the audio manually. There are moments when it’s close – you would believe the video on the screen matches the mixed audio – but there is only one precise spot when you have both audio tracks playing and think one has been muted. They line up perfectly until one disappears.

It’s my goal in everything I craft to make the craft disappear in the same way. It’s almost impossible to do, but when it’s done right, the creation stands on its own and the work put into it is invisible to the casual observer.
