Unexamined

Consider Socrates’ thoughts on vocal warmups.

Nearly 2500 years ago, Socrates said, as recorded by Plato, “The unexamined life is not worth living.” *

He was talking about the value of philosophy, but I told my students tonight that it’s just as well applied to vocal warmups.

If you aren’t fully engaged in the process of vocal warmups – accuracy, tone, vowel, ensemble, etc. – the vocal warmups aren’t worth doing.

The unexamined vocal warmups aren’t worth singing.

* This was in 399 BC, when Socrates was on trial – the one that ended with his death by hemlock.
