Twice a year, the heavenly Italian bakery near where I grew up, Bommarito’s, hangs up a sign on the door that simply says
Time for a Break
They’re gone for a couple of weeks and then they’re back.
Businesses don’t work like that – haven’t for a long, long time. But this family bakery holds fast to the idea that the personal, handmade, loving foods they offer can’t be made by other people if they want to take a break. They do it together and they aren’t replaceable cogs.
And we, as human beings, need to take a break now and then. Even as the world keeps moving, take a few moments to hang a sign on your door that says “Time for a Break,” then close up shop for awhile.
