When I need to ask for another take in the studio, there are three modes of feedback I give.
- Clear constructive feedback. “You were a little flat on the second half of the phrase.
- Distraction. A one-minute story can often serve to help a singer get out of their head and stop psyching themself out.
- Nothing. Roll tape as fast as possible for another go. Sometimes singers just need some reps to get a good take in.
Of course, this works in rehearsal as well. All three should be in your rehearsal technique toolbox.
