The Whole Range Is Yours

I hope my students explore their entire vocal range.

Yes, certain voices are higher or lower than others. And in time, if pursuing a career as a singer, specialization is probably good.

But for most of my students, singing in whatever range brings them joy is crucial. For the low voices, how about exploring your head voice more? Sing high! It’s not just for tenors and sopranos! And for the high voices, what low notes can you comfortably add to your range? Relax, don’t push, and try singing looooow! Or explore using vocal fry and whistle registers to extend your range in both directions!

I try to often say to my students (for example), “You are not a tenor. You sing tenor. You are a human.” Tomorrow your range might change! Don’t define yourself by the voice part you’re singing right now. And don’t limit yourself by it, either.
