The Art of Generosity

Real artists are generous. Even as they work to make a living at their art, they give as much as they collect.

This month, our family ordered some chocolates from a Belgian artisan that we believe makes some of the finest anywhere (and which figured in our early dating, while on tour in Belgium).

When they sent us the incorrect order, they immediately rectified it with the correct order, let us share the box they had mistakenly sent, and included a handwritten note and an extra box of chocolates.

Over and over again, I see the greatest artists share more of their art than is strictly necessary. I see it on Patreon, where artists are sharing their demos or breaking down their Logic sessions. I see it on social media, where authors share drafts, bring you inside their process, and invite interaction with their work.

Shortsighted, business-minded creators tend to hustle for every piece of art they create. True artists are able to make a living while maintaining a remarkable generosity both in their spirit and in their art.
