Tell Them Three Times

It’s good for more than just speaking.

The Aristotelian Triptych is a speaking strategies that goes something like this: “Tell them what you’re going to tell them. Tell them. Then tell them what you told them.” It’s often given as good advice for speakers, because the repetition of important ideas is essential to their being clearly understood.

It’s good for more than just public speaking, though. If you’re going to a performance festival, this rule applies.

  1. Tell them what they’re going to experience.
  2. Have them experience it.
  3. Discuss what they experienced.

This can work for any experience we’re guiding people through. We help our students process the experiences we give them by (1) helping them anticipate their experience and (3) reflecting on it.
