As much as possible, wait to make the decision.
Why? Because it allows you to practice slow thinking. I tell my children and my students often that I’m a slow thinker. That’s a little bit of an untruth – I can certainly think pretty briskly and solve problems quickly when I need to. But I choose to think slowly whenever possible. That’s because the first idea isn’t often the best one. Sometimes you need to wait for the second or third idea to enter your worldview. These ones take more time; giving yourself the space to let them arrive is a path to taking the best action.
Today I found a solution to a sticky problem in the sound design I’m doing and it was, indeed, the third solution I’d come to. It’s not all that tricky, in retrospect, but it took time for it to make itself known. And if I’d already started down the path of the first or second idea, I’d never have happened upon it.
So take as much time as you can, and give yourself the mental space to let further ideas come up.
Be a slow thinker.
