Secondary Purpose

What’s your secondary purpose?

Events have a primary purpose: a concert’s primary purpose is sharing music with an audience. A fundraiser’s primary purpose is to raise money. A meeting’s primary purpose is to make decisions and assign responsibilities.

But a meeting can also be about getting to know your colleagues better, dreaming for the future, cross pollinating ideas. Fundraisers can be about raising awareness for your cause along with the money, or connecting future collaborators on the cause. Concerts can connect people and inspire future music making, and they can be fundraisers a secondary purpose.

Almost no event worth planning doesn’t have just one purpose, and sometimes even when it falls short of its primary purpose (say, a fundraiser underperforming), it can still serve the secondary and tertiary purposes well, provided you’ve planned for them and allowed space for them to be included in the process.
