Salting

Chefs often say that properly salting food as you cook it doesn’t make it taste salty – it makes it taste more like itself.

Meats taste meatier, breads taste bread-ier, veggies taste more like themselves. A cake doesn’t taste salty, but if you leave the salt out of your cake batter, it will taste bland, bland, bland.

Teachers: be the salt in your students lives. The educator’s presence isn’t meant to make students emulate them; it’s to make students more like themselves.

Conductors: be the salt in the interpretation of the pieces you are conducting. It’s less about imposing your interpretation on the piece than about making choices that bring the piece vibrantly to life in an honest way.
