Rethinking Saving Reading Packets

Are you swimming in reading packets? I know I am.

They are a beautiful tool for discovering new repertoire, and an essential part of a choral conference (I know that when I helped organize a conference, the most consistent feedback we received was “more reading packets!”)

And yet, they are no longer the only tool – and digital tools are only getting better. Publisher samples, online repertoire lists, YouTube – all offer myriad ways to discover new repertoire without filling filing cabinets in your basement.

So I am looking at boxes of packets and thinking, “what can I do with them?” So far, my best plan is:

  1. Scan (GeniusScan on my phone) the cover page and title list from each packets.
  2. Recycle or gift to young conductor or future conductor.
  3. If there are certain pieces I want to save for my files, as a single octavo, I will remove them from bound packets and file, stapled together.
