Adam Neely is a bassist and YouTuber who makes outstanding explanatory videos about music, especially understanding contemporary music (jazz, rock, pop, etc.).
His most recent video is a must-watch.
Please watch it to understand more about the cis-white-male-centric world of traditional music theory.
I’m teaching a Jazz Theory course at Grand Rapids Community College right now, and while it certainly falls under the header of music theory, I take pains to explain that what we are talking about is a completely different way of describing music, and one that is more useful to the vast majority of 21st century musicians. Adam Neely’s new video has helped me further broaden my perspective on these ideas, and will affect the way I approach my students, my curriculum, and my thinking in the future.
