I had a little bit of a down day today. For unimportant but real reasons, I was feeling frustrated, tired, and run down. (I mean, we are still in a pandemic. That alone is enough justification for all of us to have these occasional days.)
I almost canceled my rehearsal with the Aces this evening. There were lots of justifications for doing so, but my principle of only canceling in extraordinary circumstances stopped me; especially when we’ve lost so much this year, I’m trying to grab every opportunity to make music.
I am so glad I didn’t cancel.
The two hours together, despite bouncing between rooms, standing far apart with masks, etc., reminded me of an important truth I’d almost forgotten.
A good rehearsal makes everything better. Making music together with others is, quite simply, a balm. We had laughter, important conversation, and we made music. That was enough to heal my low mood and send me out of the choir room with a joyful heart.
I hope I never again forget the gifts that a good rehearsal provides.
