One of my projects this fall is writing down a list of rehearsal catchphrases.
Many of the most effective leaders in rehearsal have a had a relatively limited number of catchphrases that they leaned into in their rehearsals. Certainly they were part of a much longer list of insights these directors could offer, but there were just a few that they repeated often. (You can read Steve Zegree’s list in his book “The Wow Factor.“)
One of mine, adopted relatively recently, is “Don’t outsource your sense of time.” Another, inherited from Duane Davis, is BWYST BWYST BT (pronounced how it sounds, and short for “Be where you’re supposed to be when you’re supposed to be there.”) I think I’ve got 5-7 more, and so I’m always paying attention for when familiar turns of phrase reoccur.
What are your catchphrases?
