Why should you commission a piece? Beyond all the good musical, pedagogical, and social reasons, sometimes it’s good to have a reason that you can publicize:
- To honor an ensemble milestone.
- To commemorate a school or organizational milestone.
- To celebrate a couple’s anniversary or individual’s birthday. (For example, a major donor!)
- To memorialize a former member, supporter, or conductor of your ensemble
- To feature during a collaboration.
- To bring on a tour.
There are lots more reasons to commission a piece that would make for great publicity for your ensemble. Using newly commissioned works as a means of community advocacy for your organization and for the arts in general is a great way to increase impact, awareness, and reach of your ensemble and of the piece.
