That Quiet Voice

How do you tune into that quiet voice? The one that guides you, and is so hard to hear, especially with the noise of the world coming in from all sides.

Here are some actions I’ve found reliable for  getting in touch with it.

  1. Write. Write whenever, whatever – eventually I can hear that quiet voice guiding me.
  2. Read. Reading wisdom in fiction or nonfiction, I am often struck by how often I read exactly what I need to spur my own quiet voice of wisdom.
  3. Listen. Being around people I love, and listening to them, I often find my quiet voice spurred into speech.
  4. Speak. Wrestling with ideas with a trusted conversation partner is a great way to trick that quiet voice into expression.
  5. Move. I have never used a device while walking or running, and that quiet voice will often take advantage of solitude and movement to speak just a little louder.
  6. Be Still. I’m kinetic. With a home, three amazing kids, and freelance work I love, I’m always moving. But finding a moment to be still is a great way to come back to that quiet voice that expresses my heart.

I’m glad that I have many ways of finding and hearing that quiet voice, because it is my compass. How do you find your voice?
