We sing a lot about love in choir. I guess we sing a lot about love anywhere.
My long-standing policy for pronouns has been that you should sing with whatever pronouns feel right for you to describe a loved one.
Certainly for soloists, but I think it could plausibly work for any song with pronouns, but without a specific character attached.* That members of the choir might be singing different pronouns is barely objectionable to me, compared to the empowerment of letting each singer sing their own truth about love. It’s appropriate to sacrifice a tiny amount of blend, on occasion, to support your singers’ humanity.
* I am teaching “Cindy” to the Aces right now – it has plenty of “she’s” in the score, and I think it’s appropriate to keep them to match the character who is singing the song.
