Perfect Solutions

Perfect creative solutions don’t exist.

And yet we still seek them.

I’ve never written a perfect arrangement. I’ve never taught a perfect lesson, brought a piece to a perfect performance, or written a perfect post.

Every book I’ve ever read has had a typo. No leader has ever been perfect, no parent has ever perfectly raised a kid.

We seek the perfect solution because what could be better? But we must balance that aim with an acceptance that we’ll never reach it. We must be okay with the compromises and flaws that will inevitably exist in any creative solution.

I sometimes feel that our world suffers from an unwillingness to accept anything less than the perfect solution.

So I practice accepting my own imperfection, even as I aim high. And I work to honor that in others, and find ways to bridge divides over differing views of what “perfect” even is.
